Therapy of anxiety syndromes in depressive moods with St. john's Wort

Abstract: The purpose of this literary survey was to reevaluate the anxiolytic efficacy of SL john's Wort extracts under an antidepressive therapy. The German monograph for St. john's Wort shows »anxiety, among others, as a field of application (Kommission E, 1989). The European monograph confirms this field of indication (ESCOP, 1996). However, O reference to relevant scientific findings is not included in these monographs. The present publication is based on an investigation in the databases Medline, Embose and Biosis for the period from 1990 (i.e. after the publication of the monograph for Hyperici herba in Bundesanzeiger to 1997. Eight clinical trials with a total of 629 patients were identified. This analysis verifies the anxiolytic efficacy under a therapy with St. john's Wort in patients suffering from mild to moderate depressive episodes marked by anxiety.
