Author(s): Andenmatten, C., Schaffner, W.

Abstract: Mahonia aquifolium (Holleyleaved Barberry) has been used in the traditional medicine of North American lndians. Pharmacological investigations in vitro and in animal models with the main constituents berberine, palmatine, oxyacanthine and berbamine as well as with the total extract have shown antiphlogistic and antimicrobial effects. The total extract inhibits the lipoxygenase, cyclooxygenase and phospholipid peroxidation. Further it acts as a free radical scavenger. Extracts of Mahonia thus seem to have an effect an inflammation at different levels. From the pharmacological profile the clinical use in the treatment of psoriasis con be considered to be reasonable. Toxicological data and the previous experience have not shown any serious problems. The requirement for a modern phytotherapeutic drug - rational reasons for its use, proven therapeutic efficacy and safety, pharmaceutical quality - are at least in part fulfilled for preparations with Mahonia. Further investigations that should complete toady's knowledge are planned or are already running.
