A proposal for classifying complementary therapies

Abstract: Public and professional perceptions of complementary medicine (CM) are clouded by inappropriate terminology which defines it by its political and social position rather than by its underlying philosophy and therapeutic emphasis. The problem has been compounded in recent years by the sprouting of apparently independent modalities which really owe their allegiance to one or more of the six major on the therapeutic emphasis of its disciplines and partly upon their antecedents. Not only would this help to clarify the services in the minds of the public and address some of the issues for the future of integrated health care, but it is also imperative if the full potential of CM is to be appreciated and exploited.
