Production and application of genetically engineered drugs

Abstract: The methods of molecular biology and genetic engeneering can be used successfully for plant cultivation and animal breeding as well as for the production of new remedies, especially for pharmocologically active proteins. The range of transgenetic organisms which are used for the production of biologically active proteins includes bacteria, yeasts, fungi, insect cells, plant cells, animal cells and now also higher developed organisms like transgenetic plants and animals.The German Pharmocopoeia 1997 as well as the European Pharmacopoeia 1997 include special quality and security standards concerning the production systems as well as the (recombinant) remedies manufactured by genetic engineering. In the following discussion, the experimental concepts of genetic engineering and different production systems are shown using examples.
