Abstract: Recent changes in delivery systems for mental-health care have brought to the fore several interrelated issues: outcomes, quality of care, and costs. One of the major points of this paper is that there is much to be accomplished in all three areas. Although cost containment was an early motivator in managed behavioral health care, outcomes and quality of services are now recognized as central to providing cost-effective care. The existing approaches of both fields are first addressed in this paper with the intent to underscore that, while differences in emphases exist, there are important substantive research areas, such as underserved populations, that might be better addressed by a collaborative effort. By highlighting those areas as well as noting the methodological challenges that exist, it becomes clear that much work lies ahead for both fields. In the future. Researchers in both fields must find constructive ways to collaborate that will cut across traditional boundaries.
