Abstract: This review describes Edge's constructive postmodern perspective on self and community. The origins and consequences of modernist thought are described in relation to the individual and society. By drawing on contemporary research and giving examples of selves and communities in other cultures, Edge offers a compelling argument for a more subtle and holistic approach in the sciences and humanities. The conceptual shift that Edge describes is greatly needed to offset the current fragmentation in science and Western culture. In this article some of Edge's themes are applied to the field of parapsychology, and I argue that parapsychology can benefit by playing with the images and ideas of psi and by developing alternatives to the current mechanistic conceptions in science.
