Abstract: This article discusses difficulties in defining emotion regulation and proposes a functional definition. Four areas of emotion regulation are identified and discussed: subjective experience, physiological responses, behavioral responses, and outcomes that are at least partially mediated by emotion (e.g., aggression). Finally some general developmental trends in emotion regulation are described.
