Abstract: The theoretical foundations of music therapy arc to a considerable extent parallel models borrowed from other disciplines. This hinders the emancipation of music therapy and detracts from its specific scientific theory formation, research and practice development. Using his own theoretical strategy and testing it on his own practice-related research work, the author presents a graduated model for the development of theory promoting steps. These lead music therapy into areas of competence it has so far not covered, though quite capable of doing so, for example the compensation of affective, cognitive and sensorimotor deficits.
