The role of play in child psychotherapy |
Journal/Book: Child Adolesc Psychiatr Clin. 1997; 6: Independence Square West, Curtis Center, Ste 300, Philadelphia, PA 19106-3399. W B Saunders Co. 69.
Abstract: This article examines the roles that play performs as part of child psychotherapy. It posits a generic form of contemporary psychotherapy based on a synthesis of dynamic, cognitive, interpersonal, and family theories relating to child development. Within this form, play serves as a medium of sustained contact between therapist and child, as a means of communication, and as a form of resistance. Play is a natural way for children to communicate, and it fulfills a vital role in the therapeutic encounter with children.
