The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music in the Treatment of Terminal Illness: A Private Practice Setting

Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1997; 15: 39-44.

Abstract: In the private practice setting there are certain advantages not often present in working with clients who are inpatients in hospitals or who are under hospice care. The greater amount of time and flexibility usually avialbale when a terminally ill client presents for treatment in a private practice setting permits the therapist and client to explore all of the dynamics encompassing illness, dying and death: physical symptoms, unresolved relationships, unhealed emotional wounds, and unfulfilled dreams. This paper focuses on the integration of GIM in a psychotherapy practice with clients who have been diagnosed as terminally ill. Case examples are given which elucidate how specific music and responses to focused listening have assisted in a broad range of client needs. Examples of both short- and long-term therapy are included.
