Abstract: We conducted four studies based on questionnaires and the autobiographical method in order to compare the self-presentation of people with high vs. Low self-esteem. Results show that high self-esteem subjects admit fewer flaws, present themselves positively and justify their behavior. They also emphasize their competencies, are critical in evaluating others and tend to compare themselves positively to significant others. Low self-esteem subjects admit wrongdoing more readily and emphasize social orientation and altruism. Interpersonal consequences of the two self-presentational styles are discussed.
