Abstract: The history of the bell and human experience with it forms the background to a description of how bandbells were developed into the musical instrument "English handbells" The sounds characteristics, playing movement and sound effect of these instruments and their use in listening therapy and active individual and group therapy are presented. The author's experience is based on the use of English bandbells in anthroposophical music therapy at the Filder Clinic near Stuttgart, Germany.
