Abstract: The development of music therapy concepts is integrated in processes of social change. The analysis offered here indicates, with reference to demographic and familial sociological developments as well as to political planning and its influence on the biographical situation of people in need of care, that this is particularly true of work with old people. Music therapy is called on to respond to these changes by systematising its methods and by expanding its treatment programs for the various areas of health care.
