Mind-body methods of pain management |

Abstract: Mind-body pain management methods begin with the mind and provide pain relief through an attentional focus. Such management includes hypnosis, biofeedback relaxation, and the bubble-blowing method of behavioral distraction. These active treatments also mobilize a child's coping and recovery skills while controlling anxiety and reliance on medication. Mind-body methods have wide applicability in pediatric practice, do not require a lot of time, and work synergistically with pharmacologic and physical treatments. They fit naturally with the pain experience, and therefore, potentially have a central role in the treatment of pain in children.
