Abstract: The psychodynamic function and the handling of somatic symptoms in psychotherapy have become a center of interest, having been neglected fora long time. This paper presents a concept of focal psychotherapy, which takes the somatic symptom as an individual response of the body to the experience of relationships and to inner conflicts. The psychodynamic diagnostic process and the formulation of the focus is described. The focus makes the link the patient has not been able to make, between the somatic symptom and the dominant affect in the central relationship conflict.
