Abstract: This article utilizes a broad range of music intervention including prose, poetry, and songs with music, in working with addictive clients to enhance their recovery. After presenting a rationale for the use of music intervention with a variety of client groups, case examples are presented throughout to illustrate how music intervention can be effectively used with addictive clients. Thus, the article fills a distinct void in the music therapy and addictions counseling literature. A social work intervention approach tested over 10 years with a variety of addictive clients in individual and small group settings is presented. It concludes with a list of suggestions to music therapists and counselors working in this field.
