The preservation of videotape: Review and implications for libraries and archives

Abstract: Videotape presents special preservation problems for libraries and archives. The medium is unstable and an inherent tension exists between the use of video and its preservation. This paper discusses the reasons for the deterioration of video magnetic tape. Steps which can prolong the life of videotape, including environmental control, optimum storage arrangements and handling procedures are described. The various reformatting options for videotape are discussed and initiatives which have begun to address the problems of videotape preservation are reviewed.
