Abstract: The current state of personality theory is surveyed, based on a content analysis of 15 current textbooks in the field. A core set of theories considered to be central parts of personality theory is identified, along with areas that are commonly omitted, despite their apparent relevance. The latter include post-1960 developments in psychodynamic theory, biological approaches, and family and systems approaches as well as topics such as racial identity and cross-cultural differences in personality Reasons for the neglect of these areas are discussed.
