Action, culture and development: Points of convergence

Journal/Book: Cult Psychol. 1997; 3: 6 Bonhill Street, London, England EC2A 4PU. Sage Publications Ltd. 335-352.

Abstract: Based on Boesch's contributions to cultural psychology, prospects as well as problems of connecting the theoretical perspectives of action, culture and development are explored in this paper. Cultural systems maintain and regenerate themselves through the regulation and control of development over the life-span. Within the matrix of sociocultural constraints, developing subjects select and construe their own developmental ecologies and create their personal cultures. Development over Life-span is thus formed by intentional action; potentialities and intentional contents of action are in turn subject to developmental change. Selected methodological implications of these views will be discussed.
