The state of the art in bias research in the United States

Abstract: Much of the impetus for bias research in the United States can be attributed to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which mandated equal employment opportunities for particular subgroups in the population. Thus, the Civil Rights Act along with the growing ethnic diversity in the United States population have given rise to a plethora of research on bias. The present review begins with a definition of bias and the relationship of bias research to test validity. The methodological and applied work since 1980 which typifies the ''state of the art'' is summarized. Recent trends in bias research are highlighted as are speculations regarding future research on bias.
