Methodological problems in register-based studies

Abstract: This article gives some guidelines to research on population based registers. The main message is that methodological problems in register-based studies do not differ much from those in other types of research. It is important to check sources of data and validate if different types of data are compatible, if they can be Linked etc. Of course the basic condition is that also register research begins with hypotheses, not with large amounts of data. Large databases of good quality can never be a substitute for poorly formulated research questions and irrelevant hypotheses.
