Induction of anti-mistletoe lectin antibodies in relation to different mistletoe extracts |
Journal/Book: Anti-Cancer-Drugs 8 (suppl.1), 57-59. 1997;
Abstract: Mistletoe extracts are frequently applied in adjuvant cancer treatment.The mistletoe lectins are especially suggested to mediate anantitumorous effect. During treatment with mistletoe lectin-richextracts, anti-mistletoe lectin antibodies preferentially of theimmunoglobulin G type are produced against mistletoe lectin (ML)-1.Interestingly, after application of mistletoe extracts containingnatural micelles, anti-mistletoe lectin antibodies of the immunoglobulinG as well as of the immunoglobulin E type were induced in parallel,suggesting that the nature and preparation of the antigens within theextract modifies immune responses. Anti-mistletoe lectin antibodies wereshown to neutralize the cytotoxic effect of mistletoe lectin onperipheral blood mononuclear cells in vitro. Thus, the mode ofapplication of these extracts seems to be of importance with respect tothe therapeutic effect.COPYRIGHT BY Elsevier Science BV, Amsterdam, Netherlands END OF DOCUMENT
