Linden (Tilia spec.) - linden flowers

Abstract: The lime-tree is closely associated with the cultural history of many ethnical groups in the Northern hemisphere: The Teutons and the Slavonians worshipped this tree which symbolizes the feminine powers. Their inflorescences (Tiliae flos) are part of the traditional folk medicine. They contain mucilages, flavonoids, phenolic carbon acids and essential oils. Although the diaphoretic effects, especially ascribed to the lime flowers, are discussed, this drug is used nowadays as a remedy for common cold and associated cough (positive monograph of the Commission E).
