Curcuma domesticaval. (Turmeric) and Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb. -A Portrait of two Medicinal Plants |
Abstract: The turmeric has a long time Tradition as a medicinal plant and a spice as well. Curcuma domestica is predominantly used as a spice (e.g. as an ingredient of the curry powder) and as a colouring matter (Curcumin, E 100), whereas Curcuma xanthorrbiza rather serves as a medicinal plant. Both plants contain yellow dyes, the curcuminolds, as well as essential oil of typical composition. Both drugs appear to be of equal use so far as the well-known cholagogue effect is concerned. Recent investigations did not confirm the general opinion that bisdesmethoxycurcumin, which is contained in C. domestica, has an anti-choleretic effect. Completely new types of therapeutical applications could result from the fact that curcuminoids are highly effective antioxidants.
