Randomized Clinical Trials in Complementary Medicine - More Harm than Good? |
Author(s):
,Abstract: The randomized clinical trial is seen as the gold standard in the evaluation of the efficacy of therapeutic interventions. There is a strong demand for randomized trials to evaluate complementary therapies. Although there can be no doubt that this demand is justified, an unretlected overemphasis on this design might lead to irrelevant or misleading results. The function and problems of randomized trials are described using the examples Hypericum for depression, acupuncture for asthma, homeopathy, and complex naturopathic interventions.
