, , ,Abstract: A male patient with disseminated adenocarcinoma of the stomach was treated intratumourally with an aqueous extract produced from mistletoes grown on pine trees (Helixor P). The carcinoma was treated in October 1992 with surgery, and in 1993 with chemotherapy and radiation. The first relapse was observed in 11/92, the second in 2/95. The oesophagus was completely occluded by unresectable bulky tumour masses in 5/96. Placement of a feeding tube or stent was rigorously rejected by the patient. Nine endoscopically injections with increasing concentrations of the drug were applied within a period of 6 weeks. At a concentration of 5-60 mg Helixor P, we observed inflammatory reactions with necrosis of the occluding tumour masses in as much as oral ingestion was possible again, and an increase of C-reactive protein and cortisol in the serum. These effects were associated with an increase of peripheral CD8+ CD28- putative suppressor cells. No side-effects such as oedema, bleeding, pain, vomiting etc. were observed during and after the treatment. In conclusion, intratumoral injection of a cytotoxic drug extract from Viscum album L. (Helixor P) is tolerable and sufficient when the primary goal is palliation of dysphagia near the end of life. These results encourage to further investigations.
