Abstract: The social and political climate of the late 1960s created on interest in program evaluation and led to a questioning of social work's effectiveness. Practice and methodological developments in psychology provided the technology for addressing same of these concerns. Together, these developments led to the emergence of the empirical practice movement. This article assesses some aspects of this movement in social work and raises questions for future consideration.
