Forty years of progress toward empirical clinical practice?

Journal/Book: Soc Work Res. 1996; 20: 750 First St, NE, Ste 700, Washington, DC 20002-4241. Natl Assoc Social Workers. 77-81.

Abstract: In the premier issue of Social Work, Preston and Mudd (1956) noted four major obstacles to conducting research on the outcomes of social work practice: (1) the lack of reliable and valid outcome measures, (2) the lock of practical research designs, (3) the lack of well-proceduralized and replicable social work treatments, and (4) the lack of appropriately trained practitioner-scientists. The post four decades have seen considerable progress made in each of these areas. An empirical clinical science of social work practice is now developing. Scientific and practice advances within the profession promoting empirical clinical practice are being aided by progressive ethical views regarding clients' rights to effective treatment and by evolving reimbursement standards promulgated by managed care companies and third-party vendors.
