Ethnological consciousness and consultation-psychosomatics

Abstract: The counseling psychosomatic works with groups who try to achieve a beneficial level of anxiety and aggression in the context of physical disease and death by forming subcultures. The subconscious character of the anxiety evolving on both sides can impair the development of working relationships. Applying the transcultural perspective to the consultation is intended to make this a conscious process. Oscillating between the technique of one's own and those of the strange subculture and partly identifying with the strangeness will further the consultant's access to the strange subculture but also provoke the formation of a virtual reality where neither the techniques of the consultant's own subculture nor those of the strange one have any validity and where personal experience is relativized by the addition of the strange experience, which requires a high level of anxiety tolerance in the consultant. This process is illustrated by three case examples.
