Abstract: This paper provides a detailed account of the auditory, communicative and linguistic development of the first congenitally deaf British infant (without additional handicaps) to receive a multichannel cochlear implant. Using lists of auditory objectives, a system of video analysis suitable for the presymbolic child and schedules of speech acquisition, the infant's progress was documented pre- and post-implantation. In addition to detailing this individual's achievements, the study provided much needed guidance on the utility of these fools in a field setting.
