Social psychology and health: Framing the relationship |
Journal/Book: Psychol Health. 1996; 11: C/O Stbs Ltd, PO Box 90, Reading, Berks, England RG1 8JL. Harwood Acad Publ GmbH. 629-633.
Abstract: Although the connectionist model makes possible a discussion of links between the individual and the social in health psychology, it needs to be understood alongside theories concerning ritual and discourse. By acknowledging that systems thinking describes forms of relationship, questions can then be asked about such things as 'claims to definition' and 'risks to meaning'. These are important issues in the study of how people sustain health beliefs, negotiate entitlement to care and make their illness situation sensible and bearable.
