Abstract: The authors provide an analysis of the 1989-1993 volumes of the Journal of Music Therapy regarding topics and issues, methods of research and findings. Exemplarily, contributions devoted to the study of the relaxing and pain-reducing effects of listening to music in medical practice are presented. Finally, the methodological standards and the concepts of music therapy as represented by the Journal of Music Therapy are critically assessed and its relevance for music therapy in the German speaking countries is discussed.
