Abstract: The depiction of the course of a patient's primary illness often can be reduced to a series of states (such as acutely ill, partially remitted, or recovered) with the 'sojourn times' in each successive state. In this article, we briefly review the way that survival analysis methods have been applied to such event-history data in psychiatric research. We then describe 'intensity modelling', a more general technique for describing and analyzing such data that is new to psychiatric research, but which we believe will have wide appeal because of its conceptual simplicity and broad applicability. We concentrate on the development of the graphical side of this technique, applying it to data from a large follow-up study. We present novel applications that shed light on a few of the most basic questions in the field.
