Abstract: Neonatal jaundice is a common disorder, and most cases are physiologic and self-limited. Pathologic causes should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Management of jaundice in newborns continues to be controversial, but the trend has been to decrease diagnostic and therapeutic intervention. This is both medically and economically sound; most studies involving babies with uncomplicated hyperbilirubinemia have not demonstrated significant long-term neurologic or developmental sequelae.
