Teaching qualitative methods: A face-to-face encounter

Abstract: This paper explores one strategy for teaching qualitative methods: the complete ethnographic project. Working as a team, students take the role of the researcher from evaluating the setting and human subjects review, through gathering, focusing, and analyzing data, to writing the final report. Project settings have included laundromats, public buses, auctions, binge halls, little-league hockey, karaoke clubs and bowling leagues. The course takes advantage of th a maturity and mobility of the ''new majority'' nonresidential student but could just as easily be adopted to the traditional campus setting.
