Abstract: Over the past fifteen years, many conceptual and empirical studies have been written which can he classified under pedagogical child research. At the center of these studies is an action-oriented effort to understand the special world of the child. In contrast, the position presented here reminds us that pedagogical semantics is tied to a historically constituted difference between childhood and adulthood. It is therefore suggested that childhood be understood as a construct or the symbolic order of relationships between the generations and that this order be made the object of childhood research within educational science.
