Abstract: In this study the influence of baroque music and the influence of traditional African music on the reading development of black students were compared. The results show that even though all the students benefitted from the reading development programme, the baroque and African music made no significant differential contributions. It was also found that the students who were exposed to the African music tended to experience it as a distraction. On the other hand, the students who were exposed to the baroque music experienced it as having a positive influence on their performance.
