Abstract: An investigation of 392 job-accommodation cases involving workers who were deaf or hard of hearing was undertaken to describe the interrelationships of (a) type of job, (b) essential function(s), (c) career progression, and (d) accommodation suggestion(s). Employers seeking accommodation information were queried concerning the nature of the job and actual or anticipated difficulties. Tables constructed to reveal patterns among the four variables demonstrated the strength of the relationship between the job function (e.g., transcribe tape, take vital signs) to be performed and the product/solution (e.g., mirrors, phone amplifier) recommended to accommodate the worker with a hearing impairment. Type of job (e.g., service, operative) and career progression (e.g., job retention, new hire) were shown to have less impact on the job accommodation process and on the specific solutions suggested.
