Abstract: One of the most difficult clinical challenges facing social workers today is suicidal behavior in clients with borderline personality disorder. This article reviews the various types of suicidal behavior exhibited by these clients, including self-destructive behavior and overt suicide attempts. Management of these behaviors is essential if treatment is to be successful. Frameworks are offered for understanding and managing both kinds of behavior.
