Abstract: In this paper, we consider the ethical dimension of working psychotherapeutically with families. We focus particularly on the role of values since they influence so radically how family dysfunction and its corresponding treatment may be construed. Although therapists have some leeway in how to deal with the issue of values in treatment, we offer a set of guiding principles we believe can contribute to sound clinical practice.
