Abstract: Research over the past year on the psychosocial aspects of gastrointestinal disorders in adults is reviewed. The major focus of this research is on functional gastrointestinal disorders, especially irritable bower syndrome. Progress has been made in understanding the role of early abuse in the development of irritable bowel syndrome. A major contribution to the psychological treatment of irritable bowel syndrome has appeared.
