Rhetorical modes, imaginative geographies and body culture in early twentieth century Rwanda

Abstract: Various rhetorical modes of representation have been used in colonial writing. The application of three of these modes shows how European power was displayed in written and photographic descriptions of the body culture of the Tutsi of Rwanda during the early twentieth century. The texts which are examined also typify European ways of seeing Africa.
