Writing in therapy: A participatory approach

Abstract: This paper explores the potential of writing with rather than to or about clients, an approach which may foster new responses to clients' dilemmas in the face of institutional, cultural, ethnic, class and gender discrimination. A selective review of literature about writing in therapy and vignettes from my own work in a community mental health clinic support this enquiry. Some implications for training are also addressed.
