Treatment of the benign prostate hypertrophy |
Abstract: In patients with benign prostate hypertrophy herbal drugs through anti-edematous and anti-inflammatory effects influence the irritative and obstructive micturition symptoms. By inhibition of the synthesis of prostaglandins and leukotrienes a distinct decongestive effect in the prostate is obtained. In contrast to the herbal drugs the synthetic drug finasterid inhibits 5-a-reductase in the prostate cell specifically and competitively. Synthetic alpha-blockers by lowering the a-adrenergic tonicity of the smooth prostate muscles are able to improve the irritative component of the micturition disturbances. Direct long-term comparisons between herbal drugs and synthetic drugs in the treatment of benign prostate hypertrophy have not yet been performed. By comparing long-term trials (duration of more than one year) for individual drugs it attracts attention that the Sabal-extract IDS 89 in the course of three years of therapy presents a higher clinical efficacy than finasterid and the alpha1a-receptor blockers. For confirmation of this tendency by means of statistical data direct long-term-trials are necessary.
