Abstract: The article reviews botany, chemistry and medicinal properties of Verbascum densiflorum BERTOL (V. thapsiforme SCHRAD.) and V. phlomoides L. Special attention is paid to chemical compounds occurring in the flowers of the species under discussion, i.e. flavonoids, iridolds, saponins, sterols, phenylpropanoids, phenolic acids, sugars, mucilages and fatty oils. The pharmacological properties of these substances are also characterized. The data of the scientific literature indicate that the flowers of the discussed species can be utilized for preparations against so-called cold diseases: inflammation of throat, larynx, and the upper respiratory tract as well as some viral diseases including influenza.
