Abstract: The common golden rod, Solidago virgaurea L., has been used in European phytotherapy for 700 years as a urological and antiphlogistical remedy. In the meantime it was replaced by the Canadian golden rod, Solidago canadensis L., and the giant Golden rod, Solidago gigantea AIT., and also substituted by both of these Solidago species. These species differ from Solidago virgaurea by the composition of their constituents, especially in the structure and action of the saponins as well as the absence of phenol glycosides, e.g. leiocarposide.
