Dental Alloys: Electrochemical and Biological Testing

Abstract: Multiple factors may account for the potential health risks of different dental alloys and amalgams. Corrosion, phase transformation and abrasion of the implanted alloys as well as the pH value temperature, microbial plaque or saliva and food composition are usually responsible for the release of single components of the dental alloys in situ. Processes leading to local or distal heavy metal side-effects in the body may be avoided by appropriate corrosion, mobilisation and biocompatibility tests including skin, lymphocyte sensitisation and/or cytotoxic investigations in view of the appropriate choice of material.
