A Master's degree in acupuncture: a landmark for the profession |
Author(s):
Abstract: University validation is becoming the norm for training courses in osteopathy, chiropractic, and medical herbalism. However, for the acupuncture profession there are additional obstacles to attaining university validation for a professional training, particularly connected with the fact that traditional acupuncture functions within a different paradigm to Western medical science. This article discusses an approach to university validation that bypasses these obstacles. The newly designed course at the Northern College of Acupuncture has a twin track which ensures that all students meet the minimum standards of the profession while, in addition, a number of the students will have the option of undertaking a research project that will lead to a Master's degree. In this way, we hope the programme will help to promote and develop research activity within the acupuncture profession.
