An investigation into the management of the spasticity experienced by some patients with multiple sclerosis using acupuncture based on traditional Chinese medicine

Abstract: One of the most disabling neurological diseases experienced by 80 000 adults in the UK is multiple sclerosis. The many forms of treatment available have not always been successful in helping these patients or preventing relapses. The holistic approach of acupuncture has been considered by trained therapists to be suitable for the management of multiple sclerosis. This paper, through assessment, classification, and treatment, studies the effect of acupuncture, based on traditional Chinese medicine, in patients whose predominant symptom was spasticity. Whilst the results of this research could not be regarded as conclusive, they were encouraging enough to invite further investigation.
