Report: Phytomedicines Quality, safety and efficacy |
Abstract: Topic of the fourth International ESCOP-Symposium (Köln, 15.3.1996) was > Phytomedicines: Quality, Safety and Efficacy«. Under quality-aspects the changes of the 2nd European Pharmacopoe as compared to the first edition, the concept of phytoequivalence, and the demands of industry for quality standards of phytomedicines were reported. In the section »Plant Monographs" among others 20 plant monographs, prepared by the scientific committee of ESCAPE (Altheae radix, Betulae folium, Boldo folium, Calendulae flos, Foeniculi fructus, Harpagophyti radix, Hyperici herba, Lini semen, Melissac folium, Orthosiphonis folium, Plantaginis ovatae semen, Plantaginis ovatae testae, Salviae folium, Solidaginis virgaureae herba, Tanaceti parthenii herba/folium, Taraxaci folium, Taraxaci radix, Thymi herba, Urticae radix, Zingiberis rhizoma), the WHO monograph programme and industry views on plant monographs were presented. Reviews of the current status of phytomedicine safety, the actual status of ESCOPs efforts to establish safety standards for herbal drugs (BIOMED-programme), as well as reports on the efficacy of phytomedicines (Trends in the discovery of antimitotic drugs; Obtaining clinical evidence for marketing authorization; Enhancement of efficacy of polyphenolic extracts) and the possibilities of proving the efficacy of phytomedicines were further subjects of the symposium.
